On March 19, 2005 approximately 250 members of UCCO-SACC-CSN assembled at the Westwood Inn in Edmonton, AB to participate in perhaps one of the most important and monumental tactics to date.
Members from every institution in the region, along with members from Pacific and Quebec region and our National Executive assisted in collecting 6100 signatures from members of the public in Anne McLellan's riding. We accomplished this by visiting her constituents door to door in the Edmonton Centre riding, and through our mall display that was set up in Westmount Centre. Media attention was in full force that day, with camera crews visiting our mall display, shadowing our members on the street in Edmonton, and conducting interviews at the banquet hall where the event was being coordinated from.
Our arrival in the riding of Edmonton Centre was preceded by a flyer that was mailed out to every address informing people of the near 36 month battle we have been waging with our employer, and that Federal Correctional Officers should be expected at their door on that Saturday morning.
With the addition of the 6100 signatures gathered on this day, our national tally has increased to just over 40, 000. The Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois were presented with our petition in late March, and are scheduled to be presenting these petitions jointly in the coming week.
The timing for the petitions could not have been better, as April 10th will mark the third anniversary of the commencement of negotiations. As we enter our third year, Correctional Officers now have the distinction of being the only bargaining group who continue to fight for a contract fitting of our jobs and our risks.
Thank you to everyone who participated on March 19. The comradery and solidarity that such events build is irreplaceable and helps in rejuvenating us to continue our battle.
